CounteR Project Newsletter #5

We are pleased to inform you that the CounteR project's most recent newsletter has been published and is now accessible on the project website.

It features an in-depth interview with Chief Inspector Minko Pondev from the Bulgarian National Police General Directorate (BGP), one of the six law enforcement agencies involved in the project. He thoroughly explains BGP’s involvement as an end-user and its contribution to the definition of national-level requirements and case studies. BGP will also participate in field demonstrations and tests to ensure that the integrated solution is put into practical use at the national level. The CounteR solution will benefit BGP's future work by enabling them to address the challenges they face in preventing radicalization, such as minority populations at risk, negative attitudes towards migrants, and extreme conservative views.

The newsletter also includes insights from the recent “Ethical and Legal Aspects of AI for Law Enforcement” conference in Brussels, attended by one of the CounteR partners. The conference was organized by several EC-funded projects, including AP4AI, ALIGNER, popAI, and STARLIGHT, and  included a range of workshops with various speakers and panelists. The topics discussed included the legal and ethical collection and use of data in law enforcement, legal grey areas in the development of AI tools, and ways to ensure compliance during research, development and exploitation. Attendees included representatives from law enforcement agencies, academia, civil society, and commerce and industry, as well as institutional representatives from EC and EU agencies such as Europol, CEPOL, and Frontex.

As already mentioned in one of our previous articles, the CounteR project’s research work has led to a significant outcome: the publication of scientific articles and specialized papers authored by distinguished experts and scientists from prominent research institutions that are part of the project consortium. A selection of state-of-the-art publications that significantly contribute to CounteR's areas of focus and objectives is available on the project website's Publications Section.

We remind you that the Privacy-First Situational Awareness Platform for Violent Terrorism and Crime Prediction, Counter Radicalization and Citizen Protection Project or CounteR is funded by the Horizon 2020 program of the European Union and submitted under the H2020-SU-SEC-2020 call for proposals, with project ID 101021607.
