Top 3 Maritime Industry Insights from SEAtalks

Fri, 28 Jun 2024

Most of us might not realize it, but the maritime industry is essential to the global landscape and our everyday lives. Over 90% of the world's trade travels by sea, making it the lifeblood of international commerce. Did you ever sit and think how your life would be affected if you were to go without this constant flow of goods? From the clothes on your back to the coffee in your cup, a significant portion of the products we rely on have journeyed across oceans on massive cargo ships.

Behind the scenes of this global trade network are the seafarers, the dedicated men and women who navigate the world's waterways. Their life at sea is unique and demanding. Long stretches away from loved ones, exposure to harsh weather conditions, and the constant responsibility of ensuring the vessel's safe operation are just some of the challenges they face. Yet, their tireless work keeps the world's economy afloat, ensuring the timely delivery of goods that fuel our interconnected society.

Navigating the future of maritime industry with SEAtalks

SEAtalks is an event organized by Seaplify, a platform dedicated among others to connecting seafarers with maritime employers. SEAtalks brought together industry leaders, students, and recruiters for a day of insightful discussions and practical advice.

The event took place on June 25th as part of Maritime Business Week. This was the beginning of a week-long exploration of opportunities and development in the maritime field, co-organized by the Chamber of Commerce, Industry, Navigation and Agriculture of Constanța (CCINA) and the Maritime University of Constanța.

Seaplify was developed by ASSIST Software to facilitate communication and career development within the maritime industry. This innovative app offers a one-stop shop for seafarers, students, and maritime companies.

SEAtalks takeaways: opportunities and challenges in the maritime landscape

Now, let's delve into some of the key takeaways from SEAtalks:

  • The gender gap in the maritime field is narrowing

The industry is witnessing a positive shift towards a more inclusive work environment. The Maritime University of Constanța is a prime example of this progress, as more and more women graduate from the institution. Thus, a wider range of talented individuals are entering the field, bringing valuable skills in communication, problem-solving, and strategic planning to the table. Teams with diverse perspectives are well-known for their ability to tackle challenges from different angles, a critical skill for navigating complex situations at sea.

Nicoleta Pascal, Commander and SAR Officer in the NRA, pointed out that, "looking to the future, the integration of women in shipping and maritime transport must continue to evolve. It involves increasing the number of women who have a job at sea and ensuring equal opportunities for promotion and leadership positions."

  • Fluvial navigation is a viable career path

SEAtalks highlighted fluvial navigation, or inland waterway transport, as a compelling career option for those who prefer to stay closer to land. The work environment is often described as physically less demanding than deep-sea jobs. Shorter trips with frequent port calls can provide a better work-life balance for some.

During his speech, Teodor Popa, General Director of CERONAV Constanța, accentuated this point: "Inland navigation is a friendly and risk-free alternative; it is an easy conversion process, and you can keep your maritime license while getting a new qualification." This option opens doors for those seeking a maritime career without venturing far to sea. The Seaplify app also serves as a great resource for anyone interested in exploring various opportunities within the maritime industry.

  • Mental health becomes a priority for seafarers

Mental health emerged as a crucial aspect to consider in a maritime career. Navigating the vast oceans requires technical skills and a strong focus on mental well-being. Seafaring careers can be gratifying but also have unique challenges. Long stretches at sea can mean extended periods away from loved ones and familiar surroundings.

However, the industry increasingly recognizes the importance of mental health and emotional resilience for its workforce. Psychologist Lavinia Tilină addressed this topic at SEAtalks, stating, "Your emotional anchor in times of stress is very important; it will start emotional and physical states that will give rise to worries, feelings, personal convictions." Understanding how to manage stress and maintain emotional control is paramount for seafarers facing long sea stretches and challenging work environments.
