Reinforcing Healthcare: ASSIST Software Starts a New Ambitious Cybersecurity Initiative
ASSIST Software proudly announces the official start of the European initiative REINFORCE (AI-Enhanced Ecosystem for Reinforcing Cybersecurity in the European Healthcare Sector). The project is co-funded by the Digital Europe Program (DIGITAL) and the European Cybersecurity Competence Center (ECCC). With a 3-year implementation period, REINFORCE aims to improve the cyber resilience of healthcare providers and protect connected medical devices against ransomware and other constantly evolving cyber threats.
Project Vision and Partner Collaboration
The REINFORCE project brings together a top-tier, multidisciplinary consortium composed of 19 European partners from 10 countries, including academic institutions, cybersecurity technical experts, and key healthcare sector stakeholders, under the coordination of ASSIST Software.
To set this extensive collaboration in motion, the partners gathered on Thursday, July 9th, 2026, for the project's online Kick-Off Meeting. This inaugural session allowed the consortium to establish the project's strategic, technical, and operational directions while enabling partners to connect, understand their respective roles, and see how their expertise fits into the broader project canvas.
Complementing this collaborative foundation, the Project Officer's presence brought a strong institutional perspective to the discussions, underscoring the project’s strategic alignment with European security standards and upcoming policy baselines.
The meeting provided a platform to establish the project’s main objectives, allowing each partner to introduce their team, specialized expertise, and intended contributions to the initiative.
The meeting served as a vital alignment point for the project’s strategic architecture, establishing how each phase of development systematically maps to the broader cybersecurity lifecycle. By focusing on integrating these core components into a unified framework, the session gave healthcare stakeholders and authorities a clear view of the project's long-term direction, ensuring that upcoming technical milestones translate directly into practical, operational support for the medical sector.
The meeting began with a comprehensive overview of the project’s main objectives, followed by an opening session where each partner presented their organization's expertise, their specific project role, and the key personnel involved. The Project Officer from the European Cybersecurity Competence Center (ECCC) also participated, outlining the Digital Europe Program's broader objectives and discussing EU-wide expectations for policy alignment, standardization, and compliance.
Moving deeper into the strategy, the core of the agenda focused on reviewing the project's Work Packages (WPs) to systematically address the cybersecurity lifecycle. Work package and task leaders outlined their strategic goals and demonstrated how each individual task integrates into the broader project framework. This detailed overview proved highly beneficial for end-user representatives, including hospitals, clinics, and healthcare authorities, providing them with a clear understanding of the project's long-term direction and how upcoming solutions will directly support their day-to-day operational needs.

Putting Healthcare End-Users at the Center of Innovation
To ensure that the developed solutions truly align with on-the-ground realities, a significant portion of the discussion focused on the end users within the healthcare ecosystem, reflecting the project's core philosophy. The consortium outlined immediate plans to comprehensively evaluate the daily operational needs and unique vulnerabilities faced by healthcare providers on the ground. Recognizing that tools are only as effective as the people who use them, the project will emphasize practical, role-specific staff training, tailored awareness campaigns, and realistic security testing for both clinical and administrative personnel. By combining these user-focused efforts with broader initiatives for policy alignment and sector-wide collaboration, REINFORCE ensures that its final solutions are not just technically advanced, but deeply integrated into the real-world workflows of European hospitals and clinics.
